Charlene Coates to Serve as Delegate to the Democratic National Convention

Arts Community Supports Delegate with Reception and Fundraiser

Charlene Coates was elected as one of Ohio's four Kucinich Delegates to the 2004 Democratic National Convention from Kucinich's own 10th Congresisonal District. The Convention will take place July 26-29, 2004 in Boston. Charlene will join with 4,353 delegates from every state and territory to nominate the next President of the United States.

Kucinich has stated that he will support Sen. John Kerry's likely nomination.
"Congressman Kucinich has publicly stated that he will support the nominee - after the convention. Until then, he has promised to continue to give voice to those who long for issues that are not currently being addressed by the frontrunner.

Congressman Kucinich remains committed to being the voice for progressive democrats and all who care about issues such as single-payer universal health care, jobs and trade policies, the war in Iraq, the Patriot Act, and the need for a Department of Peace. Our Party must continue to debate these issues." (www.kucinich.us)

Kucinich and his delegates are a vital link between the DNC and voters who might vote for third parties in November.

Coates will bring a unique voice to the Convention. She is a local poet, writer and pacificist. Coates is the open mic host for the Cleveland Poetry Slam and wrote the "Kucinich Beat" column for Cool Cleveland for 13 weeks during the presidential primaries. With the help of Kucinich Congressional Representative marty Gelfand and the Beachland Ballroom, Coates brainstormed and helped organize Ohio's only concert to benefit Kucinich in his presidential run. The Michelle Shocked benefit raised over $7,000 local dollars for Kucinich, $14,000 with matching funds.

Friends of Charlene Coates are now helping her raise funds so she can go to the convention. Over 15 artists have donated their poetry books, CDs, photography and services for a fund-raising raffle 5-9 p.m. Friday, July 16 at Art Metro Gallery in the Colonial ArtCade, 530 Euclid Ave. 216.696.1942. The reception is free and includes food and spirits. Raffle tickets are $5 donation or 5 for $20. Winners will receive prize packages with gift certificates from Halite restaurant and Mac's Backs Books on Coventry, free business cards, a party sponsored by Kwanzaa 365, poetry by Deep Cleveland Press, Sara Holbrook, photography from Jay Brown, handmade jewelery by Lisa Green, and much more.
